Marcus Soccer: A Proud Tradition

The Marcus Soccer Story began in 1990/91 under the direction of Coach Mike Oldham. A three year stint saw the first district championship in 1992. The second followed in 1993 along with a Regional Final appearance.

Coach Kevin Albury began his tenure in 1994, continuing the successful tradition with district titles, tournament titles and regional tournament appearances.

In 2001 John Gall, who is from Wales, a former U18 National Team Player, professional player, and collegiate All-American took the reigns and led the program to unparalleled heights.

Since Gall took control, the Marauders have played in the post season every year, visiting the Regional Final, Regional Quarter-finals, Area Round, BACK-to BACK STATE CHAMPIONS and the Nation’s #1 Team in 2007 and the Nation’s #3 team in 2008.

Tournament wins have also been in abundance. The prestigious Jesuit-Meintser, Arlington Martin Invitational, the NETC Invitational and The Marcus Cup have all seen Marcus’ name as winners on numerous occasions.

In 2007, and after twenty seven years of trying, the Marauders proudly sat on top as the Nation’s #1 team and Texas HS State 5A Champions. An incredible 30-0-0 overall record emulates what the Marauders had been vying for, for almost three decades. Head Coach John Gall helped the Marauders achieve the ultimate, and shown that, complete dedication in chasing goals, truly does help you fulfill your dreams.

In 2008, incredibly, the Marauders were still at the top. A classy 3-0 win over Klein in the State Championship game to win back-to-back titles, had heads turning all over the nation. A team that lost NINE starters from 2007 proved that the tradition of Marcus Soccer was stronger than ever. Never doubt the never-say-die attitude that was brought to the forefront by a coach that demands the best!

Many Marcus Alumni have progressed to compete at the collegiate level. Schools such as Harvard, SMU, MIT, the Naval Academy, Oklahoma City University, William and Mary, North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Nova Southeastern, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco, St. Edward’s University, Xavier University, University of Denver, St. John’s University, University of California at Santa Barbara, Creighton University, Colgate University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Midwestern State University and many more have former Marcus standouts play in their colors.

At  the professional level, in 2011, the San Jose Earthquakes drafted 2008 graduate Sam Garza in the first round and most recently DC United drafted 2010 graduate Zach Barnes in the 3rd round.

Garza was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2008 and Barnes was named Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2010.  Both received All-American honors as prep athletes.

After a decade and a half of excellent MMFC leadership, John Gall accepted a position with the MLS FC Dallas organization as Director of Coaching in 2016.

Filling the interim Head Coach boots in 2017 with fierce determination and dedication to the Marauders was stand-out Marcus Alumnus, Head Coach Sam Garza.  As a player, Sam led the Marauders to their back to back Texas State Championships, as well as the National #1 ranking.  Coach Garza did an excellent job of stepping in to fill the key leadership position when MMFC needed it.  His selfless sacrifices and leadership kept the team on track to overcome some unique obstacles and earn a play-off berth for an astounding 26th year in a row.

After the 2016/2017 season, LISD continued the search for a full-time Head Coach to pick up the reins from Coach Garza as he wrapped up the year.  Coach Chad Rakestraw accepted the challenge to take over leadership of the Marauders on the pitch.  Coach Rakestraw played collegiate soccer at Midwestern State, and began his coaching career more than a decade prior to joining MMFC, including a wealth of experience at the top of the game.  In the five years prior to joining MMFC, Coach Rakestraw took his teams to the Texas State Championship Finals three times, and won the State Championship twice.

The Tradition of Excellence MMFC continues!
